What if I want to get professional advice about an idea I have to start an online business?

How do I know the idea won't be stolen?? Can you somehow patent an idea? What if I want to get professional advice about an idea I have to start an online business?
You can patent certain types of ideas: intellectual property. You don't know that your idea won't be stolen. You have to use good judgment in determining whom to share your ideas with, and how much you will share鈥攐n a case by case basis.

I recommend that you avoid divulging all aspects of your idea to those whom you do not have a solid reason to trust. Those emotionally stable individuals who are very consistent, conscientious, and selfless鈥攐ver a long period of time鈥攁re potentially worthy of trust.

Provide information strictly on a need-to-know basis. For instance, if you want to know about the mechanics of setting up a site (which provider to use or how to arrange for billing and payment by customers) then, you only need to tell those people what your expectations and needs are in those specific areas.

However, if you are raising funds to start the business then, you will have to provide a business plan, a mission statement, as well as short and long-term budgets, cash flow, income projections, etc..

Your local Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau may be able to assist you. In addition, if you check the classified section your local news and trade publications then, you may be able to find other organizations or associations of interest. Are you in school? Some of the schools in your area may have clubs or affiliations that could provide you with an opportunity to network, and perhaps find a mentor.

In cases where you do not need the feedback or active participation of others in order to obtain the knowledge and advice that you seek, you can always research books and on-line resources to obtain information concerning the particulars of starting a on-line business.
